WhatsApp Business - Payment Options

While payments were not directly enabled within the WhatsApp Business Platform initially, but from Jan 2022 its enabled for certain countries (subject to WhatsApp Commerce Policy). Here are a few ways you can facilitate commerce transactions and collect payment information directly from within the WhatsApp conversaiton providing a complete seamless & secure ecommerce journey to the customer.

Card on file

If the business already has up to date payment information stored on file from previous transactions, the bot or agent would prompt the user for permission to charge this payment method again as the card on file by prompting, "Would you like to pay with your card ending in 1234?"

Redirect to external site

The business sends the user a link in WhatsApp to an external page - for example to a payment gateway, a checkout page on the company’s website, a third party e-commerce website or (India only) to UPI. On the external page, a cart is pre-populated with the user’s purchase, ready to check out. In some cases a user needs to log in on that page before proceeding with checkout

WhatsApp Pay

For countries where WhatsApp Pay service is available, customers can choose to easily & quickly pay using this service.

For instance in India, WhatsApp Pay is an in-chat payment feature that allows users to make transactions via WhatsApp to their contact list. It is UPI-based payments service that allows you to both send and receive money. It was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
